In Another Life

She had a distorted reality. When people looked at her, they were not seeing what they thought they saw. It was like looking at a distant star. You are not really seeing the star, you are merely looking at a reflection of light that was there perhaps a million years ago. That was the way it was with her. When you looked at her, you were looking at a reflection of the past. And her past was filled with demons.

There was this guy who affected her life in more ways than he could imagine. She had always been that girl who always had at least two or three guys trying to woo her. But when she saw this guy, she was speechless. She had found him interesting. He had looks. He had the charm. He knew how to talk decent and when to shut up. He was all she wanted. And then one day, he proposed to her. She felt that the universe was working on ways to make her life better. She knew she could never lose him or it would be the end.

But as there always are, complications made way between them. They lived in different cities. She was damaged and needed a person who could handle her when she was at her worst. She had a dysfunctional family, an ex who had raped her and friends who never cared. He was the last hope. But the fact that he had a great family and he loved them and valued them above anything made things worse for her.

Eventually they grew apart. They were still in contact with each other but all they could talk about was this and that. Her heart ached for him. She wanted him close. Close enough to hear his heartbeat. She wanted him to reach out to her demons that had settled well within her. She wanted him to hold her, even when she didn't want to. She wanted him to say that he would always be there for her. She wanted him to never let go of her even when she asked him to. But this was exactly what he couldn't do.

Then one day he mustered up enough courage to finally tell her that even he wanted her. It was his birthday. He couldn't sleep the entire night before ,cause of excitement. He had plans for the day. On the other hand, she too had plans for the day. After all it was his birthday. It was a beautiful Thursday morning. He got up and made himself a cup of coffee. He sat on the couch thinking about what he would say to her. He would walk right into her house and tell her that he wanted to be with her, Forever.

Even she was getting ready. She had a tedious but necessary task to finish. He drove to her house in his car with the stereo blasting love songs. Inside the house, she sat on her couch, finished her coffee and set the cup in the center of the table carefully. She went into the bathroom, opened the medicine chest, took out a razor blade and slashed her wrists.
